Come on, I'm Suddenly in a Checkmate...?

The Bandit Boss

In the end, about two days passed without incident after I added more rooms.

The bandits seemed to have taken some time off as well. About half of them spent their days lounging around in the dungeon, drinking sake or lying around sleeping. I'd assumed they were out attacking travelers and merchants every day, but apparently not. Maybe they treat the boss being away overnight as vacation time?

Well, it works out for me since I'm getting a bit more DP thanks to them sticking around.

Anyway, when the boss came back, he'd brought seven more thugs with him.

He must have recruited them from somewhere, but their strength… even calculating backwards from the DP they generate coming in, they're just thugs after all.

Roughly 10-15 DP per person per day, so seven more people means an increase of 70-105 DP in daily income. Not bad at all. On top of that, they'd also brought back a young man who was probably an adventurer, captured alive.

Yeah, gagged and bound with rope. A woman would have been more photogenic—

And then they suddenly started stabbing the young man with their swords. These people are terrifying.

The slaughter was over before I could process the sight of the pool of blood spreading across the floor being absorbed into the dungeon.

"Oh, we got a decent amount of DP from that. 300 DP, huh."

"… That's enough for fifteen of your beloved goblins, Rokuko."

Ah, I see. So it was a present for the dungeon. Yeah. That's some good dedication—I should reward them…

So, since it seemed like they'd struggled quite a bit to stab the adventurer to death, I decided to give them a sharp iron sword (150 DP). That leaves 520 DP. I really want to save up more though…

"Hey, looks like he wanted you to add more rooms."

Looking over, the bandit boss was grumbling complaints while examining the iron sword in his hand, clearly dissatisfied.

What an ungrateful guy. Here I am, graciously blessing him with a sword.

"Haah, he should've said that first, or something…"

"So what are you going to do? Make a room?"

"I don't really feel like spending that much DP… ah, wait, I know."

I went to town to fence the plundered goods.

Well, when I say I went to town, I actually went to the slums outside the outer walls.

As expected, security isn't so lax that a bandit like me can just waltz inside the walls… though a hefty bribe would change that.

Oh, about the iron helmet I got from the dungeon—I decided to use it instead of selling it. Taking good care of your first gift might bring some good luck, you know?

Anyway, I picked up seven new companions in town.

Street thugs, others in my line of work, escaped slaves… that kind of crowd.

While I was at it, I ambushed and knocked out an adventurer kid who was walking along the road alone, then brought him back to the base.

Hahaha, security really goes to hell once you're away from the city. Rookies shouldn't come to the mountain roads alone.

So then, I killed him inside the dungeon specifically so it could make another room, then fed it the corpse. The seven new members looked pretty shocked watching the body sink into the ground.

"Boss, a box appeared!"

"Ooh… wait, what's this? A sword?"

Inside the box was a sword.

An iron sword. Way better quality than anything I'd been using until now.

But that's not what I want right now. I want a room.

Obviously, with seven more people, it's getting cramped. Well, before we had six people in a small room with two rotating on guard duty, and even with the rooms increased to three, we could squeeze everyone in if we packed tight—but I want a new room as soon as possible.

As I muttered about this, another new box appeared.

"Alright, what is it this time?"

When I opened the box, there was writing on the inside of the lid: 'Not enough to make a room, so dig it yourself.'

Inside were three brand-new pickaxes.
