Monster Panic

Field, Field, Field!

"Field! Field! Fieeeld!!"

Using Tria-chan's body, I turned over the soil. The tool I used was, of course, the hoe Penpen made.

I'd been eating nothing but meat, and the backlash had me craving vegetables. And since I was at it anyway, I figured I'd go for an all-you-can-eat spread of fresh-picked produce.

"Hyahaa! A field you make by turning over the soil is normal!!"

"Tria's saying somethin' normal in a way that makes no sense, ohh."

"That's pretty much business as usual-ssu."

While I was happily making my field, Alto and Penpen butted in.

"What, it's not like it's amazing or anything, it's just an ordinary, plain old field, so I'm just calling it normal. Calling a normal thing normal is the normal thing to do."

"Ohh, ohh, ohh. 'Normal' is undergoing gestalt collapse, ohh."

"What even is 'normal,' huh?"

"Come now, Penpen. 'Normal' means common, or average, you see."

"By that standard, isn't this anything but normal? Not for the scale of one household's home garden, anyway."

And Penpen glanced over at the field.

The field I'd dug up all around our base was pretty vast.

Or rather, I'd cleared away the forest and turned over enough ground to build a fairly respectable farm.

A Home is a plot the size of a house with a yard, and in Home-equivalent terms, I'd made a field about ten by ten of them, so an area of roughly a hundred Homes.

"Back when I was using this place as my base it was just plain forest, and now it's been completely developed, hasn't it? It's wide enough to build a village, no, a town-ssu."

"Yeah, when I tried to make a field inside my Home, there wasn't much land to spare, so I started leveling the ground outside it, and before I knew it the thing got huge."

"Going overboard with the land-leveling is a classic, ohh."

For the clearing work, by the way, I'd had Alto use an Attribute Cartridge (Fire) in her gun to mow everything down and slash-and-burn it.

Alto had just been roasted by flames the other day, but she didn't seem the least bit traumatized, cheerfully going "Hyahaa! Disinfection time, ohh!" Truly, sales folk are tough.

Once she'd roughly cleared things out, the rest was surprisingly easy, since Tria-chan had the stats for it.

Maan, you can't go wrecking the environment like this in real life, and this kind of thing is one of the joys of the game too! It's fuuun!

"I mean, if you just want to eat vegetables, I could spare you some, you know-ssu?"

"Ohh, ohh, ohh. I had time on my hands, so this is just right, ohh?"

"Right? I've gotten bored of leveling up too. And there's no sign of the third character unlocking, either."

It's a spoiled thing to say, but where meat's concerned, I've been hunting edible monsters like Boars, Orcs, and Minotaurs by the truckload, so I'm fully stocked. Heck, I've even been catching fish like Devil Salmon, so my inventory's packed with those too.

Yes, in other words, the next turn belongs to vegetables!!

Huh? You're saying I should just go hunt some edible plant-type monster, then?

Well, the thing is, there don't seem to be many of those around…

"Now then, that's enough plowing the field… time to sow the seeds!"

"No, you've gotta make furrows first, Tria-shi."

"Furrows…? What're furrows?"

"You haven't seen them in my field? You know, those little hills and valleys-ssu."

"Ahh, those things!… Wait, don't those form automatically when you sow the seeds?"

"They do in a Home field, but outside the Home you have to make them properly-ssu."

So I had to make the furrows myself too, it seemed… This is suddenly getting tedious, huh?

"Spirit-sama. Shall I take over here~?"

"Spirit-sama, Tria can do it too. Please, give the order."

"Oh, right. We've got Auto Mode, don't we."

"If you'll split the finished veggies with me, I'll have Nika-chan help too, ohh?"

"I'm counting on you. I did spread things out a bit too much, after all."

Well, at this scale, it'd be more than any one person could ever eat.

"Then I'll go whip up some liquid fertilizer-ssu. It's the kind you just need to spray on. Miitei-chan could probably scatter it nicely, being a Slime and all-ssu."

"Leave it to me! If it's medicine from Penpen-sama, you know it's foolproof!"

"Oh, and by the way, what vegetables are you going for? I'll fine-tune things depending on that-ssu."

"Cucumbers and tomatoes. I figured something you can pick and eat as is would be nice."

"Plant cabbage too, ohh! I wanna eat salt cabbage, ohh!"

"Got it-ssu, I'll make some mayonnaise too!!"

She gets it! As expected of Penpen. Penpentastic.
